Art in Hart

The City of Hartford along with a local group of art enthusiasts (Art in Hart) have partnered with VBH and will be adding murals to the downtown area of Hartford, WI.

Artist John Kowalczyk began painting the mural on Hank's September 4th 2022.

We dedicated the completion of this mural with a ribbon cutting on Saturday, Sept. 10th 2022.

Thank you to these generous donors: Douglas Jeweler, Broan-NuTone, Laufer Trucking and the Hartford Lions Club

We are currently reviewing all the submissions for the murals.

Last September, their first installation was completed by artist John Kowalczyk. John’s mural now brightens
the wall on Hank’s Restaurant & Drinkery on the main intersection of Hwy 60 & 83. The mural is of
Orioles and irises – the city bird and flow
er. The response from the public has been extremely positive
and many people are looking forward to seeing more.

We are currently hoping to have murals done walls on these buildings in 2023.

The Art in Hart committee has another 13 businesses who are excited to have murals painted on their
walls in coming years. Preliminary ideas of what the committee would like to see included in the murals
will be sent to a variety of professional mural artists from Wisconsin. The Hartford community
submitted many wonderful ideas that are included in the wish list. Murals may include but are not
limited to: “Be Kind”, puppies, Pike Lake, historic Hartford postcard, Schwartz Beer, trains, planes and
Kissel automobiles The artists will then submit their renderings and costs for consideration.

Did you know the (self-proclaimed) mural capitol of Wisconsin is 315 miles away - up north in Ashland?
They have over twenty murals! Population 7,918. (Hartford has 15,747 residents according to the 2021
census.)

The Art in Hart Committee plans to continue to add to the beauty of Hartford in the coming years. They
believe this will not only enhance the esthetics of our public spaces but encourage more visitors to think
of Hartford as a destination to visit. The group envisions creating walking tours with maps and that
would tell the audience about the artwork, an historic home or building, or the park they are wandering
through.

Hartford’s tag line is: Hartford. It’s happening here. The Chamber’s website says it well: “It’s the air in
your face as you hike Pike Lake. It’s the sound of applause from Schauer Arts Center. It’s marveling at
vintage autos at Wisconsin’s largest Auto Museum. It’s all happening in Hartford. Come be a part of it!”

Donations of any amount are encouraged and welcomed from anyone! Every dollar will help us hire an
artist.
There is a QR code near the Hank’s mural for donations (tell your friends!)
